IRELAND’S JAMES MCCLEAN has apologised for the controversial tweet he made in the wake of Ireland’s disappointing performance against Kazakhstan.

McClean’s previous tweet described Ireland’s display in their 2-1 win last night as “a joke,” however this morning he issued an apology, tweeting:

“i apologise for my tweet last night, it was stupid, disrespectful and i let my frustration get the better of me which still aint an excuse.”

McClean had earlier in the week drawn further controversy by tweeting that he was fully fit to play in the World Cup qualifier, despite suggestions to the contrary from others.

He was left as an unused substitute for the game, with many fans and pundits believing he deserved to start in the game.

McClean has since deleted his Twitter account, following these comments.
