RORY MCILROY HAS signalled his intentions to continue his steady ascent in the world of golf by claiming the no1 spot in the world rankings.

Speaking to the BBC, he said he was relieved to have been in good form at the recent KLM Open, successfully recovering from a wrist injury that had curtailed his progress briefly.

And while the Northern Irishman said he was delighted about recently breaking into the top 3 in the world golf rankings, he expressed hope that he would continue his climb in the near future.

When asked if he was considering a push for the no1 spot, McIlroy said:

“Next season definitely. I think Luke still has quite a healthy lead, but as long as I can get closer to the top 2 guys by the end of the year and give myself a good platform to attack it next year – that’s the main goal for the rest of the season.”

McIlroy also dismissed rumours that suggested he was leaving Northern Ireland for good, which came after news emerged that he was buying a house in America. He said:

“Northern Ireland’s my home. It’s never going to be any different.”

Despite his good form, McIlroy ultimately failed to win the KLM Open, finishing third, with Britain’s Simon Dyson winning.
