Meath squander seven-point lead to finish level with Laois

The Royals appeared to be coasting with a sizeable second-half advantage.

Meath 0-13
Laois 0-13

LAOIS CAME FROM seven points down in the second-half to earn a draw in last night’s Allianz Football League Division 2 game against Meath in Navan.

Michael Newman was in excellent scoring form for Meath, particularly in a first-half during which he kicked seven points to help the Royals into a 0-9 to 0-4 lead at the interval.

They extended that advantage to seven points within two minutes of the restart, but Laois suddenly clicked into gear and hit seven points without response, before Ross Munnelly added another to put them ahead for the first time in the game with five minutes remaining.

Having led by seven early in the second-half, Meath were now in danger of losing the game but they had substitute Eamon Wallace to thank for giving them a share of the spoils, as he pointed late on to leave the teams level on 0-13 each at the final whistle.

Michael Newman finished the game with eight points for Meath (six from frees), Brian Menton scored two and there was one each for Eamon Wallace, Stephen Bray and Graham Reilly.

Donie Kingston top-scored for Laois with five points (three from frees), John O’Loughlin and Paul Kingston both kicked two, while Ross Munnelly, Darren Strong, Conor Boyle and Brendan Quigley all chipped in with one each.
