ALL-IRELAND CLUB finalists generally tend to have a few families at the core of their squad.
But Galway outfit St Thomas, bidding for their first ever national hurling crown next Sunday in Croke Park, take that trend to a new level.
There are 18 brothers in the Galway club’s squad with two Skehill’s, two Sherry’s, two Kelly’s, three Cooney’s and three Murray’s.
But it is the Burke family that provides the heaviest numbers to the team with six brothers – Kenneth, Sean, David, Cathal, Darragh and Eanna – all involved in the recent semi-final replay win over Loughgiel Shamrocks. In addition their father John is the team manager.
As RTÉ’s Marty Morrissey found out this is a club that is certainly close-knit.
