THE BALLON D’OR ceremony takes place this evening, with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Manuel Neuer all vying for the top prize.
Cristiano Ronaldo is favourite to lift the award, having continued his phenomenal goalscoring record in 2014, helping his club Real Madrid win the Champions League in the process.
Perpetual rival Lionel Messi also had a good year, showing a similarly prolific goalscoring rate at club level, while guiding Argentina to the World Cup final and subsequently claiming the coveted Golden Ball award.
Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer arguably had the most successful year of all, winning the World Cup with Germany and featuring in the Bayern Munich side that earned an impressive league and cup double.
