The government liked* Mexico so much they're sending someone there again

*And by liked, we mean liked the potential of increased trade with the country.

THE GOVERNMENT IS looking to strengthen trade links with Mexico again as Junior Minister Joe Costello jets off to the Latin American country.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter visited Mexico last month as part of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations, and President Michael D Higgins made an official visit in October 2013.

Costello, who accompanied President Higgins last year, will be focusing on trade and investment opportunities for Irish companies on this trip.

“Mexico offers exciting opportunities for Irish companies and higher education institutions as Ireland moves forward with our dynamic, export-led growth,” the Trade and Development minister said.

I am looking forward to meeting with representatives of Irish companies who are successfully exporting and doing business in Mexico and with Mexican companies which are trading with Ireland or are potential trading partners.

The Minister will be heading to Querétaro, where the Department notes that several Irish companies have already set up.

In a meeting with the city’s mayor, Costello intends to discuss potential investment in Querétaro, as well as Mexican investment in Ireland and the Mexico-Ireland Business Conference taking place in Dublin next month.

The Minister has several other meetings scheduled, such as with Kerry Group’s Regional Centre of Excellence for Latin America.

Mexico was Ireland’s 17th largest export partner in 2013, and our largest trading partner in Latin America.
