Conlan the pick of the Irish in boxing draft

Michael Conlan could compete in next season’s World Series of Boxing after he was drafted by the United States on Sunday.

OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALLIST Michael Conlan was snapped up in the first round of the 2012/2013 World Series of Boxing draft on Sunday.

Conlan, 20, was drafted by the United States team who moved early to add the Belfast flyweight to their squad for the coming season.

He must now decide whether to take up a contract offer with the WSB, the annual competition which sees 12 franchises of amateur boxers compete in professional-style bouts.

Conlan was one of six Irish fighters drafted on Sunday, the highest number of any country. He is set to be joined in the United States squad by heavyweight Sean Turner who already has WSB experience having fought with the Los Angeles Matadors last season.

Former European youth champion Jason Quigley and middleweight Conrad Cummings were drafted by the Mexico Guerreros team while 2009 European bronze medallist Eric Donovan and Donegal lightweight Tyrone McCullagh were taken by the Kazakhstan Astana Arlans.

The new WSB season will start on 16/17 November 2012.
