THE GAME ITSELF may have lacked intrigue at the best of times, but there was one amusing pre-match moment from today’s Ireland-England encounter.
Beforehand, as he was meeting the teams, Michael D Higgins appeared to say something to Raheem Sterling. And while both Adam Lallana and Wayne Rooney laughed in reaction, the Liverpool winger remained stone-faced.
Perhaps Higgins was attempting to persuade Sterling to move to his beloved Galway United, in light of the player’s troubled contract negotiations at Anfield. Whatever it was, the youngster seemingly failed to share the Irish President’s amusement.
