Michael D Higgins to mark 100 years since Titanic left Ireland

The president will travel to Cobh today, exactly a century after the liner docked there.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins will attend a ceremony today marking the centenary of the Titanic’s visit to Ireland.

The President will visit Cobh to mark exactly 100 years since the ill-fated liner docked at the Cork port to take on final supplies and passengers before setting out across the North Atlantic.

The victims of the Titanic disaster will be commemorated at the event, which will also feature vessels from the Naval Service in a fleet review.

Meanwhile, one restaurant in the town – which saw people from all over Ireland board the liner as it set out for the US in April 1912 – will serve a special Titanic Dinner menu, with the same dishes served to first class passengers aboard the liner.

Among the eight courses are cream of barley soup, toast with shrimp butter, and stuffed marrow.

On Monday a memorial cruise for the Titanic docked in the town as it retraced the liner’s route across the Atlantic, with passengers in period costume – and exactly the same number who sailed in 1912.
