Redknapp: Modric promised Real Madrid swap

The ex-Tottenham manager claims the club are happy to sell the Croat, provided the price is right.

FORMER TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR manager Harry Redknapp has claimed Luka Modric was promised he would be granted a move to Real Madrid.

The future of Croatia international Modric has been the subject of intense speculation during the off-season, with the midfielder reportedly keen on a move to La Liga champions Real.

But the Spanish club are apparently unwilling to match Spurs’ high valuation of their playmaker.

Redknapp, who was sacked at the end of last season and replaced by Andre Villas-Boas, does not expect Modric to still be at Spurs when the next season begins later this month.

“I would not be sure Luka would start the season at Tottenham. The club would be happy to sell if they get the right money,” he told The Sun.

“The chairman (Daniel Levy) said to him last year ‘Give us one more season and if Real come in I won’t stand in your way’.”

Spurs have reportedly turned down a part exchange approach from Real for Modric, as the north London side hold out for a transfer fee of approximately 40 million pounds.
