THERE WAS MORE good news today for Giovanni Trapattoni’s Ireland side, with the announcement that they have moved up four places into 21st in the latest FIFA World Rankings.
The news comes during what has been a fantastic month for Irish football, as the team qualified for Euro 2012, beating Estonia 5-1 on aggregate in the process.
Elsewhere, Spain remain top of the table by a comfortable distance, despite their recent 1-0 loss to England, while the Netherlands and Germany are behind them in second and third place respectively.
As far as the home nations are concerned, Northern Ireland are down five places to 89th, England have moved up two places to fifth, Scotland have also moved up two spots to 49th and Wales have dropped five places to 50th.
The rankings are an important indication of a team’s seeding going into draws for major tournaments.
