History Bhoys: Lennon blown away by Barca victory

“They will go down in the history books of the club as the team that beat probably the best team in the world.”

CELTIC MANAGER NEIL Lennon has hailed his team’s 2-1 win over Barcelona as “‘one of the greatest nights in the club’s recent history.”

Goals from Victor Wanyama and Anthony Watt sealed a famous victory for hosts Celtic in the Champions League clash at Parkhead, with Lionel Messi’s late strike a consolation for the visitors.

Celtic were without the likes of key men Emilio Izaguirre, Thomas Rogne, Scott Brown and Gary Hooper through injury, making their achievement of beating the La Liga leaders all the more impressive.

James Forrest and Lassad Nouioui were also sidelined.

“I think it’s one of the greatest nights in the club’s recent history,” Lennon said. ”Very poignant on our 125th anniversary.

To play Barcelona in such a prestigious game and then to win the game under huge difficulties with the squad decimated with injuries and illness.

The players are heroes, they’re heroes to me.

I can’t speak highly enough of their performances tonight and they will go down in the history books of the club as the team that beat probably the best team in the world.

Barca coach Vilanova felt his players could not be faulted for their efforts and reserved special praise for Celtic keeper Fraser Forster.

“We interpreted the game well, knew what we wanted to do, created many chances, but didn’t finish well and their keeper was great,” he said.

“I don’t like to lose, but if we have to lose, let it be this way.”

The result leaves Celtic second in Group G, two points behind Barcelona and three ahead of Benfica. Spartak Moscow are fourth on three points.
