JOHAN SANTANA WROTE his name into baseball’s record books last night when he pitched the first no-hitter in New York Mets history, leading the team to an 8-0 win over the St Louis Cardinals.
Santana’s was the 275th no-hitter in Major League Baseball but the first in the Mets’ 50-year history, coming in the club’s 8,020th game.
A no-hitter is a game in which a team is not able to record a single base hit, although runners can get on base by walks and errors unlike the much rarer perfect game (in which no runner gets on base by any means).
The achievement came courtesy of a dash of luck and some superb fielding from Santana’s team-mates. In the sixth inning, Carlos Beltran’s line drive was called foul by an umpire, though replays showed that it should have stood.
In the seventh, Mike Baxter was at full stretch to make a catch from Yadier Molina, crashing into the left-field wall to make the play and injuring his shoulder in the process.
“Tonight we all made history,” Santana told his team-mates in the clubhouse afterwards. “Yeah, baby! Believe it!”
