LYDIA KO CLINCHED the New South Wales Open on Sunday and smashed the world record as the youngest ever winner of a professional golf event at the age of 14.
The New Zealand teenager, who was born in South Korea, carded a bogey-free round of 3-under par 69 to finish four strokes ahead of second-placed Becky Morgan at Oatlands Golf Club in Sydney.
Bettering her runner-up spot in last year’s tournament, the world No1 amateur, made history by beating Amy Yang’s women’s record of 16 years, 192 days and Ryo Ishikawa’s overall record of 15 years, 8 months.
And Ko very nearly capped the stunning performance off with a hole-in-one on the 18th, but her shot struck the flag pole.
It’s a pretty amazing feeling. I don’t know what to say,” she said to Sky News Australia.
“All I know is I played really consistent all week and I am really happy to be part of history. It’s like a miracle it’s not something you can have like clicking your fingers.”
