NIALL CAREW HAS stepped down as Waterford senior football manager after a two-year spell in charge.
Waterford exited this year’s championship in the All-Ireland qualifiers against Carlow having previously lost to Clare after a replay in the Munster championship.
In 2013 they had been defeated heavily by Kerry in the Munster semi-final but bounced back to lose narrowly by a point to Galway in the first round of the qualifiers.
Carew assumed the managerial reins with the Déise in November 2012 after having spent the previous five seasons as a selector with Kildare when former Armagh All-Ireland winning captain Kieran McGeeney was at the helm. This year ex-Lilywhite Ronan Sweeney joined him in Kildare in a coaching capacity.
Carew’s other previous managerial experience included filling the position with the NUI Maynooth side in the Sigerson Cup. At club level in Kildare he has been the manager of Robertstown and Ellistown, steering the latter to the semi-final stage of the county senior football championship.
Waterford now join several other counties on the lookout for new football bosses with vacancies also currently in existence in Wexford, Carlow, Derry, Offaly, Louth, Leitrim Armagh and Westmeath.
