O'Neill happy with Hoops as Greeks come to town

Michael O’Neill says that he’s “not applying for jobs elsewhere” as Shamrock Rovers prepare for tonight’s Europa League clash with PAOK in Dublin.

SHAMROCK ROVERS MANAGER Michael O’Neill says that he’s not going anywhere as the recently-crowned Airtricity League champions ready themselves for the next installment of their Europa League odyssey.

Greek side PAOK visit Tallaght Stadium this evening (k.o. 6pm) with the Hoops hoping to go one better than the narrow 2-1 defeat which they suffered in Salonika a fortnight ago.

Back then, however, O’Neill and the Rovers players had more pressing matters on their mind, namely the chase for their 17th domestic title which they have since wrapped up with wins against UCD and Galway United.

Now the club’s only concern is the remainder of their Europa League campaign. That, and the small matter of their manager’s contract which has been dicussed without resolution for the last few months.

“I’m not really looking to go elsewhere,” O’Neill said yesterday amid renewed speculation linking him with the vacant Northern Ireland position.

“I’m not applying for jobs elsewhere.”

The progress at Rovers has been great, but there’s still so much more that can be done with the club. Hopefully over the next few weeks, we can find a resolution to the contract situation.

Star striker Gary Twigg is the manager’s only injury doubt ahead of tonight’s clash while his opposite number, Laszlo Boloni, travels without five of his squad — Athanasiadis Stefanos, Pablo Contreras, Pablo Garcia, Vladimir Ivic and Tsoukalas Stavros.
