Open Championship costs Rory McIlroy as Tiger takes No 2 rankings spot

Luke Donald remains at the top of the rankings with Woods, McIlroy, Lee Westwood and US Open champion Webb Simpson completing the top five.

TIGER WOODS HAS moved up to second in golf’s world rankings after finishing third at the British Open, while Adam Scott is into the top 10.

Woods has replaced Rory McIlroy behind world number one Luke Donald. Donald finished in a tie for fifth at Royal Lytham and St Annes but despite again missing out on his maiden major victory, the 34-year-old is confident he can break through at one of golf’s four main tournaments.

“I’ll leave this week knowing that my game is definitely good enough to win majors,” Donald said.  ”It’s a big step forward for me from a few weeks back, at the US Open (where he missed the cut).”

Donald remains at the top of the rankings with Woods, McIlroy, Lee Westwood and US Open champion Webb Simpson completing the top five. Scott has moved up seven positions into sixth after an impressive but ultimately fruitless performance at The Open Championship.

The Australian was on track for his maiden major title at Royal Lytham and St Annes before four consecutive bogeys allowed Ernie Els to walk away with the claret jug. Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Matt Kuchar and Justin Rose sit below Scott in the top 10.

Hunter Mahan has dropped out of the top 10 to 13th, while Els has moved up 25 positions to 15th after the fourth major win of his career.
