FOLLOWING IN THE wake of yesterday’s announcement that a calf injury had ruled West Brom’s Shane Long out of Ireland’s crucial European Championships qualifier with Russia next week, it has emerged that Sunderland’s John O’Shea, formerly of Manchester United, has also been deemed unfit to travel.
According to a statement released by the FAI this morning, the defender has been suffering from “a calf and hip strain” and was “declared unfit to take part in Tuesday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Russia” after a medical examination.
The squad will travel to Moscow in O’Shea’s absence later on this evening.
