Ospreys 19-10 Leinster (FT)

Hello, and welcome to our liveblog of today’s match. Here are the teams:

Ospreys: Richard Fussell, Hanno Dirksen, Tom Isaacs, Andrew Bishop, Eli Walker, Matthew Morgan, Rhys Webb; Duncan Jones, Matthew Dwyer, Joe Rees, Lloyd Peers, Jonathan Thomas (Capt), George Stowers, Sam Lewis, Joe Bearman.

Replacements: Arthur Ellis, Marc Thomas, Daniel Suter, James King, Morgan Allen, Kahn Fotuali’i, Jonathan Spratt, Ross Jones

Leinster: David Kearney, Andrew Conway, Brendan Macken, Andrew Goodman, Fionn Carr, Ian Madigan, Isaac Boss; Heinke van der Merwe, Thomas Sexton, Jamie Hagan, Damian Browne, Devin Toner, Rhys Ruddock, Shane Jennings (captain), Leo Auva’a

Replacements: James Tracy, Jack McGrath, Martin Moore, Ben Marshall, Jordi Murphy, John Cooney, Noel Reid, Sam Coghlan-Murray

We’re just underway, and Leinster are already deep in their opponents’ territory.

Leinster 3-0 Ospreys: Ospreys are penalised for a deliberate knock-on as they attempt to quell a Leinster attack, and Ian Madigan slots the penalty over confidently (3 mins).

It’s been an assured start from Leinster.

TRY FOR LEINSTER!

A kick is charged down deep in Ospreys territory, and Leo Auva’a is the quickest to react, diving over the line (8 mins).

It looked as if he never had full control while diving over the ball, but the referee awards the try nonetheless, after consultation with the video official.

Madigan then comfortably kicks over the conversion in front of the posts.

Great try-saving tackle on George Stowers by Rhys Ruddock in the corner, knocking him out of play in the process, after a well-worked Ospreys move.

Leinster 10-3 Ospreys: Matthew Morgan kicks over a relatively straightforward penalty, after a period of sustained Ospreys pressure forced their opponents into making an infringement.

Madigan then responds almost immediately, with a superb kick into the corner.

Ospreys are coming more into this game, following Leinster’s terrific start.

They’re currently probing inside the opposition 22.

Ospreys 6-10 Leinster: Morgan with another well-executed penalty to reduce the deficit further (21 mins).

Leinster need to pick it up. They’ve been on auto-pilot in the last few minutes.

The impressive Eli Walker has just produced a fine individual run, outpacing two Leinster players, before eventually being tackled by Fionn Carr.

It’s all the more impressive, given that the heavy rain is not making for ideal conditions.

Indeed, there are plenty of simple mistakes being made by both sides thus far, understandably, on account of the conditions.

RTE’s Conor O’Shea suggests “direct rugby and territory” are imperative “on a day like today,” as both sides continue to commit elementary errors.

Meanwhile, Conway sprints towards the try line following a kick and go, but the ball is intercepted at the crucial moment by the Ospreys defender.

Madigan fails to adequately execute a cross-field kick after a period of intensive Leinster pressure, but there had been an advantage, and ref brings it back for a penalty in front of the posts.

However, Madigan makes a mess of the subsequent penalty, failing to connect properly with the ball and hitting his attempt horribly wide as a result.

It’s been far from vintage rugby from either side – but again, they will point to the less-than-ideal conditions as an excuse.

Ospreys 9-10 Leinster: Morgan maintains his 100% record, to bring his side to within one point of the visitors, with the last kick of the half (40 mins).

So Leinster have the slight edge at half-time.

In a game characterised by errors amid awkward conditions caused by heavy rainfall, Leinster capitalised on their opponents’ sloppy start, charging down a kick that led to the game’s opening try.

Ospreys came more into the game as the half progressed, with Leinster also looking somewhat error-prone at times.

They were a tad fortunate that their only try was awarded, with Leo Auva’a appearing not to have fully grounded the ball, while Fionn Carr should have done better, as he charged towards the try line after a chip kick through, only to let the ball slip out of his hands as he dived over the line.

The second half has begun…

Leinster continue to play overly expansive rugby in these difficult conditions, and Conor O’Shea continues to criticise them for doing so.

Let-off for Leinster, as two of their players fail to gather a clever kick through, as Eli Walker dives over for a try, but the ref brings it back for a Leinster knock-on.

Judging by replays, the apparent knock-on never happened.

Duncan Jones is sin-binned for cynically coming in from the side and consequently impeding a Leinster attack.

Madigan’s penalty from distance then falls short.

Andrew Bishop of Ospreys is tackled by Tom Sexton of Leinster (INPHO/Huw Evans).

Great break from Madigan, who is tackled just before the line, courtesy of a fantastic Rhys Webb tackle.

A Leinster try looks inevitable at the moment, but as I type, Ospreys win back possession and clear their lines.

With half of the second half having been played, there’s still been no scores since the break, though both sides have had plenty of decent opportunities.

TRY FOR OSPREYS!

Ospreys 16-10 Leinster: Richard Fussell bursts through a gap in the Leinster defence, before playing an intelligent pass to the onrushing Eli Walker, who darts over the line unchallenged (62 mins).

Morgan makes no mistake with the conversion, and as a bonus, the hosts have now been restored to 15 men.

Ten minutes remaining, and Leinster need a converted try.

They’re currently approaching the Ospreys 22, but as I type, there is a knock-on for the umpteenth time today, with Dave Kearney the culprit this time.

Ospreys 19-10 Leinster: Nice controlled rugby from Ospreys, leading to Morgan slotting over with a well-executed drop-goal (74 mins).

Game over?

“Leinster only have themselves to blame,” is the verdict of Conor O’Shea, who cites missed opportunities and a failure to adequately cope with the conditions, as reasons for their difficulties.

Two minutes left.

Richard Fussell has been named Man of the Match, partially owing to his starring role in the try.

Eli Walker was the other main contender – the pacy youngster certainly looks like he could be a star of the future.

FULL-TIME: OSPREYS 19-10 LEINSTER

So, it’s probably a deserved victory for Ospreys ultimately.

Leinster failed to play to their strengths in the scrum, and didn’t fully adapt to the dire conditions.

Moreover, their lack of a killer instinct was reflected by the fact that they failed to score a point for the last 67 minutes of the game.

Ospreys, meanwhile, without ever really excelling, delivered a more competent performance than their opponents in difficult circumstances – namely, the bad weather and the loss of players to international duty.

Eli Walker, in particular, stood out for the hosts, and showed signs that he has the potential to be a future star of Welsh rugby.

That’s all from me.
