Those annoying couples on Facebook? They stay together longer

Sorry, everyone else.

HATE ALL THE lovey-dovey couples on your Facebook timeline? We’ve got some bad news.

A new study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison asked 180 college-age couples  about their level of commitment, and how long they had been together.

Then, their Facebook pages were examined – researchers counted how many photos they posted together, how many times they posted on each other’s timelines in the past month, and the mutual friends they shared.

Six months later, the researchers went back to ask if each couple was still dating…

And the ones who over-shared on Facebook were more likely to stay together.

Catalina Toma and Mina Choi, the authors of the study, say this is NOT because they’re too mortified to back out (as many people would expect).

All that over-sharing has actually helped some couples to bond:

These publicly posted cues likely induced participants to perceive themselves as part of a romantic unit, thus cementing the relationship.

In short – expect to be seeing a lot more romantic selfies, cutsey posts and #spoiledrotten Instagrams from now on.
