Staying Put

Owen Franks will not be joining his brother Ben in Europe

The prop has re-signed with New Zealand through the next World Cup.

OWEN FRANKS LOOKS set to become the most-capped All Black prop of all time after re-committing to New Zealand Rugby.

Franks, who currently sits second on the list behind Tony Woodcock on 90 caps, has re-signed with both the All Blacks and his Super Rugby side, Crusaders, through to the next Rugby World Cup in 2019.

The move means Franks won’t join his brother Ben who left New Zealand to sign with London Irish last season.

The 29-year-old has missed just 15 Tests since making his All Blacks debut in 2009, and is currently the 10th most-capped All Black of all time.

All Blacks Head Coach Steve Hansen said:

“On behalf of the All Blacks and New Zealand Rugby, I want to congratulate Owen on his re-commitment to New Zealand.

He’s one of the best in the world in his position and his formidable work ethic, commitment to the team’s values and outstanding play make him one of the most respected players in our team and we’re very happy that he has decided to stay.”

While Franks pointed out that the main reason for staying was that he felt like he still had more to offer both his club and country.

“Whilst there was considerable interest internationally, I felt I wasn’t ready to give up playing with the best players in the game. I also believe that I haven’t reached my full potential yet and don’t want to leave until I feel I have.”
