Welsh centre Williams making positive progress after spinal cord injury

The 22-year-old has improving function in both of his upper limbs.

WALES INTERNATIONAL CENTRE Owen Williams is making “positive progress” following the spinal cord injury he sustained in June, according to the Cardiff Blues.

The 22-year-old suffered the damage while playing for the Welsh region at the Singapore World Club 10s event, when he landed awkwardly following a heavy tackle. The rugby community has since been united in sending Williams their best wishes.

The latest statement from the Blues – who have provided regular updates on the four-time capped centre’s condition – says Williams has improving function in both of his upper limbs, while he is expected to sit up in his bed in the coming weeks.

“Cardiff Blues are today pleased to report that Owen Williams is now making positive progress following his spinal cord injury six weeks ago,” reads the club’s release.

“Owen has been at the Welsh Spinal Injuries and Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff for the last three weeks. Owen now has improving function in both of his upper limbs, whilst being on enforced bed rest. He will be progressing to sitting up over the coming few weeks.

“Whilst it is still early days in his recovery, Owen remains positive and overwhelmed by the messages of support from around the world. Owen and his family would like to thank the media for their support and the continued respect of his privacy.”

The hashtag #StayStrongforOws ['Ows' being the player's nickname] has been used widely on social media in recent weeks, while numerous rugby stars have uploaded photos of themselves using the ‘O’ hand symbol in support of Williams.

6ft 3ins midfielder Williams underwent initial treatment at a Singapore hospital following his injury, before being transferred by air ambulance back to Wales.
