Waterford Whispers receives praise from The Washington Post

Waterford Whispers News was today featured in The Washington Post.

IRISH SATIRICAL WEBSITE ‘Waterford Whispers News’ has been praised by the Washington Post for its satirical take on last Sunday’s solidarity march in Paris.

A photograph of the march, which was taking place to commemorate victims of last week’s attacks in the French capital, was digitally altered by ultra-Orthadox Israeli newspaper HaMevaser to remove German chancellor Angela Merkel and other women.

It is thought the decision was taken for reasons of religious modesty.

Waterford Whispers News subsequently responded by posting an image under the heading ‘Feminist Newspaper Photoshop’s Male World Leaders Out Of Paris March’.

In this image, only Angela Merkel, Federica Mogherini (Italy’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy) and Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo are shown to be marching in an otherwise empty street.

In an article published today, Adam Taylor reflects on the original decision by HaMevaser to edit the photograph and describes Waterford Whispers News as having “the best response”.

Of the image, Taylor says:

Like much of the best satire, there’s a sad element of truth behind it.
