THE DEPARTMENT OF Foreign Affairs has unveiled a new passport card which can be used to travel around the EU.
The card will be available from mid-July to all Irish citizens who are over 18 and hold a valid Irish passport. The card will have a maximum validity of 5 years (or the remaining validity of an individual’s passport book) and will cost €35.
Those interested in getting a card will be able to do so online or by using a new app launched today.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan also says the card will be handy for people who use their passports as ID.
“The Passport Card will be particularly useful for young people who use their Passport Booklet as identification, especially on nights out.
“As a father I have often felt concern about the impracticality of the Passport Booklet as a means of identification for young people on nights out and this new Card will be a far more practical option.”
The card features a number of security features, including a hologram on the back.
