Past deadline: Spurs snap up Ryan Nelson from Rovers

Nothing can stop Harry Redknapp signing players, it’s a compulsion.

JUST WHEN YOU thought it was safe to turn on Sky Sports News: Tottenham Hotspur have made a post deadline day signing.

Harry Redknapp told reports on Tuesday night that he would let Sebastian Bassong leave to Wolves on loan as long as he could find a replacement.

Bassong joined Mick McCarthy’s outift, but nobody came in throught Spurs’ news-crew laden gates. Until now.

Ryan Nelson is the man drafted in as cover. The New Zealander is allowed to move to London after Blackburn Rovers agreed to cancel his contract.

Nelson captained the All Whites in the 2010 World Cup, but has made only one first team appearance this season.

Spurs assistant coach, Kevin Bond told the Telegraph that Nelson, 34, could make his debut against Liverpool next Monday: ”He is fit and eligible to play on Monday, I’ve just had a cup of team with him in the canteen. He is looking forward to the challenge.”

However, speaking to press in his native New Zealand, the centre-half was less assured about his current physical state after knee trouble.

“My match fitness isn’t where I would like it be yet.” He told stuff.co.nz, adding that he hopes to help Spurs into a Champions League place as well as compete for medals in the near future after a tenure laced with disappointment at Blackburn.

“It’s never been about money for me…this is a great life experience; it’s just an incredible opportunity.”
