Pat Gilroy steps down as manager of the Dublin footballers

County board chairman Andy Kettle confirmed the news on Wednesday night.

PAT GILROY HAS stepped down as manager of the Dublin footballers after four years in charge.

The former Dubs star, who led the side to three Leinster titles and last year’s All-Ireland victory over Kerry, will not return for a fifth year as Dublin look to put the disappointment of their semi-final defeat to Mayo behind them.

County board chairman Andy Kettle confirmed the news on Wednesday night.

Gilroy said: “It has been a challenging four years for me balancing my role with Dublin along with family and work commitments and I have decided not to continue for a further term.

“I would like to express my appreciation to my management and backroom team who were very supportive at all times and to the players for their exceptional commitment and dedication.

“Thanks also to the county board and the clubs for their encouragement and assistance since October 2008.

“I will give my full support to the incoming management team if required and I would be pleased to assist the Dublin GAA Board if requested at some time in the future,” he added.

Kettle paid tribute to the 40-year-old: “Pat has done an outstanding job as manager in winning three Leinster titles and regaining the All-Ireland title in 2011 after a sixteen year wait.

“I regret his departure but appreciate the huge sacrifices he has made over the past four years.

“The committee will commence the process of considering suitable candidates to replace Pat and his management team shortly.”

Focus will now switch to Gilroy’s replacement.

The clear favourite since the defeat to Mayo has been the Dubs’ under-21 manager Jim Gavin, who has led the side to two All-Ireland titles, with Dessie Farrell stepping up to fill Gavin’s role.
