Paul Dunne: Walker Cup win even better than my Open Championship adventure

Dunne secured the vital half point for Great Britain and Ireland

IRELAND’S PAUL DUNNE has said that Great Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup win today ranks even higher than his Open Championship exploits.

The 22-year-old from Greystones secured the deciding half point to ensure GB&I would win back the cup, finishing all square with Maverick McNealy in Sunday’s singles.

After Sunday morning’s foursomes GB&I carried a 10-6 lead into the singles, and after Ashley Chesters, Jimmy Mullen and his fellow Irishman Cormac Sharvin all won, a half point for Dunne was guaranteed to secure victory.

McNealy had this five foot putt to beat Dunne on the 18th hole, but it slipped left of the cup, guaranteeing the victory.

Dunne, who was in a tie for the lead heading into the final round of The Open Championship in July, said that being part of a Walker Cup winning team was even better than his exploits at the major.

“I will take winning over 30th place every day. It’s so much better to do it as a team. Nigel has been a fantastic captain and inspired us from start to finish.” he said.

After two defeats on Saturday, Dunne picked up a one-and-a-half points from two in the foursomes and singles on Sunday, winning a valuable point earlier in the day with his fellow Irishman Gary Hurley.

Hurley and Sharvin secured wins for the Irish on the final day’s singles, while Dunne and Jack Hume scored a half point each. Gavin Moynihan was defeated 6&5 in the anchor match, but it proved academic to the scoreline, with Great Britain and Ireland cruising to a 16.5 to 9.5 win.
