MAN-OF-THE-match Paul Kerrigan expressed his delight at the manner in which Cork bounced back today from the ‘personal abuse’ they suffered after their heavy Munster final defeat to Kerry.

Cork got their season back on track with a seven-point victory in their Round 4 qualifier against Sligo this evening in Tullamore. In the process they set up a quarter-final meeting with Mayo and Kerrigan, who starred as he struck 0-5, insisted that no one had been ‘more disappointed’ than the Cork players after the provincial decider loss.

“Everyone saw the Munster final and how bad it was,” Kerrigan told Sky Sports after the game.

“There was no one feeling worse than us. Some of our lads got personal abuse, personal messages and things like that. I suppose it comes somewhat with the territory. As I said, there was no one more disappointed than we were.

“We were delighted to just get a win and get back into the Bank Holiday weekend. Seven points is a nice total, Sligo put together a good qualifier run and we knew coming up here today it was going to be a tough one. We’re happy out with the win. There’s loads of things to work on.

“We were really doing it today for our whole panel and our backroom staff. This win was really for all of us. It was good to get back on the horse and we’re looking forward to Mayo next weekend.”

Cork adopted a more defensive approach for today’s game and it did serve them well.

“It’s something we practiced last year for a bit and we just didn’t implement it during championship,” revealed Kerrigan. “It was something we looked slightly at again during the league this year.

“It was something we used today, we looked at Sligo and we thought it might work against them. I think we have the players to do it. We certainly have a very good squad.”

Kerrigan also paid tribute to the attitude shown by the players that were omitted from the starting line-up before today’s game against Sligo.

“There was a lot of guys dropped today but in fairness they kept their head up all week and they came on and done the business again today. That’s very important from our point of view.”
