Peamount clinch title as WNL goes down to the wire

A 1-0 win at home to Shamrock Rovers sealed the Women’s National League title for Peamount United.

DUBLINERS PEAMOUNT UNITED clinched the inaugural Bus Eireann Women’s National League with a 1-0 win against Shamrock Rovers in Greenogue yesterday.

With only three defeats all season, Peamount knew that a point would be enough to pip Raheny United to the title and were on their way when top scorer Stephanie Roche scored the game’s only goal — her 23rd of the season — in the 16th minute.

The Peas now have their sights set on a domestic double when they meet Rovers again in the Cup Final in a fortnight’s time, as well as a return to Champions League football next season.

“I’m just so happy,” defender Louise Quinn told the League of Ireland Interview Show. “Finally this time has come, we’ve put in so much hard work.

It was right to the wire, we had to get the win today. It left the tension good and the emotions high. We’re so, so happy.

Raheny finished three points adrift in second place after they finished the campaign with a 5-2 win against Castlebar Celtic, while a 1-1 draw for Cork Women’s FC at home to Wexford Youth Women’s was enough to give them third spot.
