Petrol bombs thrown at police in Portadown riots

Police were attacked by masked youths at the sectarian flashpoint of Corcrain Road in the Co Armagh town.

NORTHERN IRISH POLICE have been attacked by petrol bombs and other missiles during late-night disturbances in Portadown, Co Armagh.

The Corcrain area of the town, which is a sectarian flashpoint, saw up to 100 masked youths face off with police after a tense week in the North.

UTV News said bricks, fireworks and other missiles were thrown by crowds who had gathered in the area.

The BBC added that it was not yet known if there were any injuries.

The tensions follow violence elsewhere in the North earlier this week, with violent demonstrations from nationalists over the traditional Twelfth of July parades.

26 people were arrested during nationalist riots on Wednesday, while 22 police officers were injured on Monday night in advance of Tuesday’s parades.
