Poll: Should assaults on emergency workers carry a specific prison sentence?

There have been calls for a minimum sentence specifically relating to assaults on workers like gardaí, firefighters, nurses, prison officers and paramedics.

FRESH CALLS HAVE been made for legislation introducing a mandatory minimum jail term for anyone convicted of assaulting frontline emergency workers.

This is something garda representatives have been calling for for years and Fianna Fáil’s Niall Collins raised it again this weekend, following an incident in Kildare last week in which shots were fired at gardaí.

He said they are putting themselves in harm’s way to do their jobs and should be protected. His party has previously proposed a minimum sentence of five years.

We want to know if you agree: Should an assault on an emergency worker be a specific offence with a set minimum sentence?
