THE IRISH SUN has abandoned its traditional ‘Page 3′ picture of a topless female model in favour of a clothed glamour shoot.
The newspaper has recently come under pressure to drop the feature by the No More Page 3 campaign, with head of the group Lucy-Anne Holmes saying a daily picture of a semi-naked woman in a family publication only served to reinforce “1970s sexist values”.
The Irish edition of the tabloid made the move based on the need to reflect “cultural differences” in Ireland, according to the Irish Times. The UK edition is continuing to run the old format, for now, but is said to be in talks over the issue – with News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch recently describing Page 3 as “so last century”.
