THE RECENT CONTROVERSY surrounding Sinn Féin’s expulsion and suspension of certain councillors in Cork East has had a multitude of reasons attributed to it.

One of those is that their incumbent TD there Sandra McLellan is having her seat protected, despite disparaging reviews of her performance thus far coming from certain sources in her constituency.

Meanwhile, in the capital Seán Haughey, ex-minister of state and son of former Taoiseach Charles, may well tonight be selected to run for Fianna Fáil in Dublin Bay North in the next general election. Haughey previously lost his seat in the 2011 election after serving in Dáil Eireann for nearly 20 years.

But given the antipathy many Irish people feel towards politics here, would it make sense for some new faces to make their presence felt on the benches in the Dáil?
