Poll: Should parents be able to access details of sex offenders living nearby?

New figures have shown the number of criminals on the sex offenders list.

LATEST FIGURES SHOW that there are 1,420 criminals on the sex offenders list in Ireland.

Unlike some other jurisdictions, the details of where sex offenders live are not open to the public. The government has promised to publish legislation dealing with these issues.

One opposition TD has tabled a bill that would enable parents or guardians to find out whether a person coming into contact with their child has a sexual offence conviction.

There would likely be concerns from civil liberties groups and others who fear that the law could lead to cases of mistaken identity, vigilantism and suspicion.

Today’s question: Should parents be given access to details of sex offenders living in their area?

Poll Results:

Yes (5882)
No (937)
Don't know (434)
