WE HAD THE first ‘red alert’ weather warning of the year last week, as ‘Storm Rachel’ brought high winds and rain to the west coast in particular.

However as the bad weather hit hit, some aired their criticism of Met Éireann on social media, complaining that weather wasn’t nearly as bad in their area compared to what had been predicted.

The weather service’s head of forecasting has defended the warning system — but speaking to us before Christmas admitted that at the start of last year in particular, some people said they were becoming inured to the alerts.
