Prince Philip undergoes heart surgery

The Duke of Edinburgh is being treated for a blocked artery which had been causing him discomfort.

PRINCE PHILIP, THE husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, has been given a heart stent overnight.

The Duke of Edinburgh, as he is also known, was taken to hospital yesterday with pains in his chest and underwent surgery last night. However, Buckingham Palace has refused to confirm if the 90-year-old suffered a heart attack.

The Prince was taken from the Queen’s estate in Norfolk, where the royal family celebrate Christmas, to Papworth Hospital in Cambridge where tests showed a block coronary artery.

“This was treated successfully by the minimally invasive procedure of coronary stenting,” the palace said in a statement. “Prince Philip will remain in hospital under observation for a short period.”

Prince Philip cut back his official duties after his birthday last June.
