PSG admit interest in Rooney

However, the club deny making an approach for the Manchester United striker.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has admitted his side are interested in Manchester Untied’s Wayne Rooney.

However, he denies the club have made any approach for the 27-year-old.

The England striker has experienced a tumultuous relationship with Alex Ferguson and, after being left out of the Red Devils’ side against Real Madrid in the Champions League last month, it is believed Rooney told team-mates he could soon leave the Premier League leaders.

Cash-rich PSG are one of only a few clubs who have the finances to actually make a move, but Al-Khelaifi has distanced the Ligue 1 outfit from any possible deal.

“I think we didn’t, honestly, talk to (him). He’s a great player, one of the best strikers in the world,” the PSG president told Sky Sports News.

“I think everybody would like to have him, but if you want to talk about the facts, we didn’t approach him,” he added.

One major stumbling block to any deal could be the news this morning that a new 75% tax rate on  high incomes would apply to top football players despite previous claims from clubs that they would be exempt.

“The new system will apply to all businesses that pay salaries of more than one million euros ($1.3 million),” Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault’s office said, after media quoted club owners as saying they would escape the tax.
