Quinn steps down as Sunderland chairman

The ex-Ireland player will undertake a new ambassadorial role for the club.

NIALL QUINN HAS stepped down from his role as Sunderland chairman, the club’s official website has confirmed.

Quinn will now look after Sunderland’s profile and business interests overseas.

Sunderland’s American owner, Ellis Short, has agreed to take over as the club’s chairman.

Speaking about his new role, Quinn said:

“This is a great opportunity for us to make the club stronger and I’m delighted that Ellis has agreed to support the plan.”

Meanwhile, Short praised Quinn, indicated he was confident the Irishman would thrive in his new role:

“With financial fair play rules coming into effect it is essential for the long-term success of the club that we develop interests on a global scale and there’s no-one better than Niall to sell the ethos of Sunderland to an international audience.”

Quinn had been chairman at Sunderland since 2006, and also had a short spell as manager of the club.
