Body of man found at same location as abandoned baby Maria

The discovery was made at Steelstown Lane in Rathcoole.

THE BODY OF a man in his 30s was found on Steelstown Lane in Rathcoole in the early hours of this morning.

The location is the same spot where a newborn baby girl, now known as Maria, was found earlier this month.

Gardaí have said that there are no links established between the two incidents at the moment.

The discovery was made by a passer-by at around 2.50am this morning – and gardaí were immediately notified.

Gardaí say they received a 999 call just before 3am this morning to the Command & Control Centre. On arrival, they found the body of a man.

The man had suffered from visible stabbing injuries but gardaí are awaiting the outcome of the post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and the services of the State Pathologist were requested.

Gardaí have established the identity of the deceased, but his name will not be released at this time.

An Incident Room has been established at Clondalkin Garda Station and a Divisional Search Team is conducting a search of the area, CCTV footage in the area is being examined and house to house enquiries are ongoing.

Superintendent Brendan Connolly speaking at Clondalkin Garda Station this afternoon appealed for witnesses.

“Gardaí wish to appeal for witnesses who may have been in the area of Steelstown lane last night or early this morning  or to anyone who can assist with this investigation to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on 01-6667600, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Superintendent Connolly continued “We are very anxious to speak with anyone who travelled on Steelstown Lane between 12 midnight last night and 3 a.m. this morning and urge them to contact us at Clondalkin Garda Station”.

Superintendent Connolly advised that “at this early stage of the investigation no link has been established between this incident and the discovery of a baby girl in the same vicinity in recent weeks”.

The scene – just off the busy N7 dual carriageway – has been preserved for a technical examination and the Office of the State Pathologist has been called.

An appeal for witnesses has been made and anyone with any information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
