Van Barneveld ousted from PDC World Championship

26th seed Mark Webster dumped out the Ally Pally favourite.

FIVE-TIME WORLD champion Raymond van Barneveld was ousted from the 2014 PDC World Championship by Wales’ Mark Webster.

Webster, a former Lakeside champion himself, beat the popular Dutchman 4-3, to set up a quarter-final clash with either second seed Michael van Gerwen or 18th seed Gary Anderson.

The 26th seed, Webster had ridden his luck into the last 16 at Alexandra Palace, London, surviving match darts in the second round against John Henderson, but arrested three deficits – 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 – to pinch the match in a deciding set.

Earlier, Simon Whitlock continued his sensational march through the tournament with a 4-0 demolition of Kevin Painter.

The Australian fourth seed has not conceded a set in the tournament so far and showed further glimpses of his current form as he brushed Painter aside on Friday.

A closely fought opening set saw Whitlock hit four 180s on the way to edging a 3-2 victory.

However, after claiming the first leg of the second, Painter managed to get his name on the scoresheet just once more in the remainder of the match as Whitlock cruised into the quarter-finals.

He will now face Ian White, who came from behind to beat Richie Burnett in the day session.

Welshman Burnett opened up a 3-1 lead to leave himself one set away from the last eight, but White recovered in superb fashion, conceding just two legs for the remainder as he stormed to victory in the final three sets.

Peter Wright delivered the best three-dart average of the competition so far as he triumphed 4-3 in a thrilling encounter with Michael Smith, who had knocked out top seed Phil Taylor in the previous round.

The players shared the spoils from the opening four sets which all ended 3-2, before the encounter burst into life in the fifth, with both players producing scintillating darts.

Michael Smith hit a 136 checkout to win that set after the players had achieved five maximums between them.

However, Wright fought back to claim the remaining two sets, ending the match with an average of 105.81.

Wright progresses to face Wes Newton, who eased past Scotland’s Robert Thornton 4-1 in the afternoon session.

After Newton went two sets clear, Thornton looked to have clawed his way back into the tie with a hard-fought 3-2 win in the third.

However, Newton re-assumed control in the fourth by claiming a 3-0 victory, before closing the game out with a 3-1 win in the fifth.

In the opening match of the day, South African qualifier Devon Petersen upset Justin Pipe 4-1 in the last remaining second-round match to book a clash with three-time semi-finalist James Wade in the next round.
