30 cars broke a red light on this junction in half an hour

Motorists are being urged to pay attention to the lights.

MOTORISTS ARE BEING urged to slow down at traffic lights after a local community group counted 30 cars breaking a red light in just half an hour.

Phizzfest, the Phibsborough community arts festival said in a post on Facebook that during their festival, the dangers to pedestrians were highlighted.

In response, the group took a half-hour survey at the Doyle’s Corner junction in the Dublin town.

They say that from 4.15pm to 4.45pm this past Tuesday, 30 cars ran the lights heading away from Dublin city.

We recorded 30 cars breaking a red light on the North Circular Road heading west and on the Phibsborough Road heading north. Our survey will continue over seven days at different times of the day. The results will be published here. We would be happy to hear your thoughts.

Brian Farrell of the Road Safety Authority told TheJournal.ie that motorists should be more careful at junctions.

“It is a penalty point offence and those breaking lights are risking two points and an €80 fine.

There is a problem with “amber gamblers” who pick up speed when approaching an amber light to try and get through.

“A red light means stop, amber means prepare to stop. It’s as simple as that.”
