Redheads really, really want a ginger emoji

The petition states ‘an important group of people are still missing from the emoji family of 300 new symbols’.

A PETITION HAS started for a redhead emoji to be included in the emoji family.

A website which celebrates red hair, Ginger Parrot, has called for a redhead to be added after Apple recently rolled out a new batch of emojis.

TheChange.org petition started two weeks ago and so far has almost 5,000 signatures.

It states, “Despite the recent racial and sexual ‘diversification’ of Apple’s emoji…there’s still an important group of people missing from the emoji family of 300 new symbols.

Redheads. In all their glorious gingerness, they’ve been missed out. Again. If you say you’re going to diversify, why not add a few red-haired emoji in the mix?

“Natural redheads may be rare at less than 2% of the world’s population, but that is 138,000,000 iPhones waiting to happen.”

The latest batch of emoji will be released in the next iOS 8.3 update in the middle of this year.

The Unicode Consortium is responsible for setting the international standards for characters like emoji.
