Doherty to complain over Norris after 'sexist and deeply inappropriate language'

Regina Doherty will be complaining to the leader of the Seanad over remarks by David Norris earlier today.

FINE GAEL TD Regina Doherty is to make a formal complaint to the leader of the Seanad following comments by the independent senator David Norris in the upper house earlier today.

Doherty, the deputy director of Fine Gael’s Seanad referendum campaign, was the subject of a foul-mouthed tirade by Norris in the chamber earlier today and admitted she was upset by the remarks.

“I have to admit that I was upset by the personal nature of the remarks that Senator Norris made about me in the Seanad earlier today. They were contrived and intentional,” she said in a statement this evening.

Norris said earlier today: “The idea that someone who has been a member of this house… has to listen to ‘The Regina Monologues’ from somebody who’s not a wet week in this house, talking through her f***y, I object on the strongest possible basis.”

Doherty, a TD for Meath East, said she will be making a formal complaint to the leader of the Seanad, Maurice Cummins, and made a point of saying that the remarks by Norris did little to bolster his argument for retention of the chamber.

She added: “Senator Norris’ sexist and deeply inappropriate language certainly brought public attention to the Seanad today.

“But his comments have done absolutely nothing to strengthen his claim that the superior level of debate in the Seanad means the Upper House is worth saving.”
