Revenue laptops stolen

Office of the Revenue Commissioners says laptops are encrypted, but it will investigate what kind of information was stored on them and how secure it is.

A GARDA INVESTIGATION IS underway after a number of laptops were stolen from the Revenue Commissioners yesterday evening.

Ten laptops were taken from the offices of the Revenue at Ashtown Gate, Navan Road, Dublin, at around 7.15pm.

The laptops were chained and padlocked to desks.

A statement from the Revenue says that CCTV footage shows three men forcing their way into the building through a side fire door. The Revenue Commissioners say the laptops are encrypted.

The office is still establishing what information was stored on them and how sensitive that information is.  It contacted the Data Protection Commissioners “first thing” this morning to report the incident.

RTE’s crime correspondent Paul Reynolds said on today’s News at One that it was more typical for cyber criminals to target organisations online or through their systems, rather than taking hardware.

It is not know if anything else was stolen in the incident.
