Rob Elliot could miss Newcastle's clash with Burnley tonight because his wife is expecting

Goalkeeper will travel with the team but will be excused if he’s needed back in Tyneside.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND international Rob Elliot may miss Newcastle’s top-flight clash with Burnley at Turf Moor tonight because his wife is close to giving birth to their first child.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew will bring three goalkeepers with him – Elliot will travel along with Jak Alnwick and 17 year-old Freddie Woodman but will be excused should he need to return to Tyneside.

The 28 year-old is set for an extended run in the side after regular first-choice Tim Krul suffered an ankle injury prior to the weekend’s defeat to West Ham.

The Dutchman could miss as many as 11 games and Pardew has described his absence as a ‘big blow’.

“I think he’ll be back mid-January, or the start of January if we’re lucky.  It’s a big blow for us. Robbie is more than capable of deputising, he’s an Irish international. We wish him well.”

He’s been sitting in the background for along while, and he’s come in at times and I’ve played him in cup games, and he’s done terrific for us. I really felt he needed the game on Saturday, and I thought he looked a bit rusty really. It’ll do him the world of good for Burnley.

Elliot’s start against the Hammers on Saturday was his first Premier League appearance of the season but he couldn’t prevent Newcastle from suffering their first defeat since the end of September.
