Transfer Window

Robbie Keane edges towards Birmingham move

Claudine looks like she’ll have to pack the Louis Vuitton luggage again this January.

IT SEEMS THAT no transfer window would be complete without a move for Robbie Keane. This one is no exception.

The Irish Times report that Ireland captain Robbie Keane is expected to undergo a medical with Birmingham today ahead of his proposed €8.2 million transfer from Tottenham.

McLeish told PA: “It is not fair to name names. We are working actively, the board and myself, to try and enhance the striking positions.

We know we haven’t scored enough goals. That is something we have to rectify in the second half of the season. We know that. We know our targets and we’ve got to go for them.

Birmingham have also been linked with Cardiff’s Jay Bothroyd and – on loan – Liverpool’s Ryan Babel.

Keane has slipped down the pecking order at White Hart Lane and is desperate to play regular first-team football. He has also recently been linked with a move to relegation-threatened West Ham although nothing materialised.

Birmingham’s lack of goal power has been the main reason why they have been locked in a survival battle during the first half of the season.

Midfielder Craig Gardner is the top scorer with just five goals and McLeish has become frustrated by his side’s inability to convert their chances.

Sky Sports News are reporting that Birmingham lodged a £7 million bid for the Tallaght man.

But according to the Daily Mail the situation has been made more complicated by Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp’s desire to prise Andy Carroll from Newcastle, with Keane being offered as a make-weight.

Brum are looking at Manchester City striker Jo as well as Keane for a move to St Andrew’s, according to local media.

West Ham, Aston Villa and the Magpies continue to monitor the situation.

Harry Redknapp said last night:

I think Birmingham have made an offer for Robbie – I’m not sure, around about £7million (€8.2) or whatever for him – and it’s up to Robbie really.

If it’s a move he fancies, we wouldn’t stand in his way. Robbie either stays with us and plays for his place or he moves on permanently but he’s certainly not up for a loan again. It’s up to Robbie at the end of the day what he does.
