MANY REMAIN THOROUGHLY absorbed by the battle in La Liga between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo but there’s an equally-remarkable head-to-head in German football.
Last term, Robert Lewandowski managed 36 goals in all competitions, with 30 of those coming in the Bundesliga as Bayern Munich racked up another domestic title.
But he was beaten to the Bundesliga’s Golden Boot by Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who hit 31 league goals and 34 overall.
It’s an incredible subplot to the season – the two biggest clubs in the country and two relentless attackers who keep on scoring.
And their respective form shows no sign of calming down anytime soon.
With the two teams having already clashed in the German Super Cup and Lewandowski and Aubameyang both getting on the scoresheet, they were on Cup duty on Saturday as Bayern and Dortmund took on some lowly opposition.
Lewandowski scored twice as his employers put five past Chemnitzer FC while Aubameyang went one better and grabbed a hat-trick as Dortmund eased to a 4-0 win over FC Rielasingen-Arlen.
