Roddy Collins is back...as manager of Derry City

Collins had guided Athlone Town to the Airtricity League Division 1 title in September.

RODDY COLLINS IS back in football management as he is set to take the reins of Derry City.

The club’s official website confirmed today that Collins is set to take the reins of the club and he will be assisted by club legend Peter Hutton.

The statement read:

“The Chairman and Board of Directors of Derry City Football Club would like to announce that a new managerial team consisting of Roddy Collins (Manager) and Peter Hutton (Assistant Manager) has, today, been put in place.”

Collins replaces Declan Devine, who left the club by mutual consent at the end of the season.

The appointment will represent the latest chapter in Collins colourful managerial career after he guided Athlone Town to the Airtricity League Division 1 title in September.

Collins tenure there ended in controversy. Last week Collins expressed his surprise live on Newstalk’s Off The Ball after being informed that a tweet from the club’s official account read: “News on the appointment of the new manager tomorrow.”

Athlone Town later revealed that the account had been “compromised” and added that the claim was untrue.

On Friday, the club insisted that they had wanted Collins to stay on as a manager and only advertised for a new boss when they felt that Collins was not committing to another season. Yesterday Mick Cooke was confirmed as the new Athlone Town manager.

Collins has extensive managerial experience having previously been in charge in Ireland of Bohemians, Monaghan United, Cork City, Shamrock Rovers and Dublin City.

He also had spells abroad with English outfit Carlisle United and Maltese club Floriana.
