MANCHESTER UNITED WILL be without Wayne Rooney when they look to book their place in the last 16 of the Europa League against Ajax tomorrow night.

United manager Alex Ferguson revealed that the striker is still suffering from a throat infection which he has had since last week’s first leg in Amsterdam, which United won 2-0.

Rooney missed training to rest up over the weekend and, although he reported to the club today, Ferguson has decided to leave him out of his plans for tomorrow night.

“Wayne is out tomorrow. He has a really bad throat,” Ferguson said (Daily Mail). ’There were traces of it in Amsterdam and we gave him some medication but it got worse.”

Rooney, who has scored 17 league goals this season, will hopefully be available for their next Premier League match against Norwich this Sunday, Ferguson added.

Either Lokomotiv Moscow or Athletic Bilbao await United in the Europa League last 16 should they progress tomorrow.
