Roscommon sign off on Newton appointment

Des Newton was confirmed as the Rossies’ senior football manager at a county board meeting last night.

DES NEWTON HAS been formally appointed as the man to lead Roscommon’s senior footballers for the next two years, the county board confirmed last night.

Newton, who won back-to-back Connacht championships as a Rossies player in 1990 and 1991, had been widely tipped to take the reins following Fergal O’Donnell’s shock resignation as manager last month.

Since hanging up his boots, Newton has been involved with county development squads and club sides, including Dublin club Kilmacud Crokes where he served as a selector for a number of seasons.

Details of his backroom team will be finalised in the coming weeks.

The county board also ratified Nigel Dineen to take charge of the county’s U21 footballers for two seasons.

Dineen, who was part of the U21 backroom staff when the side captured the Connacht title in 2010, will be joined by Eddie Lohan, Basil Mannion and Denis Gavin.
